Thanks /r/wine for being awesome and broadening my horizons a bit. A wine bar near me has "sommelier Sundays" where they pour you a blind flight of three wines and if you correctly guess the country of origin and varietal for two out of three, you get the flight for free!
I had two whites and a red, and the the second I put my nose in the red, I was swept back to the January tasting challenge with French cabernet franc! Dusty rose petals, lots of bright red fruit, barnyard funkiness... I knew it was cab franc, and I knew it had to be french. I went a step above and guessed 2012 Chinon, when it was actually 2013 Anjou, but I got what I needed!
For those interested, the first wine was a 2013 Gruner Veltliner (Austria) which I got. The second wine was a 2012 Pfalz Riesling (Germany), which really tripped me up because of its subdued petrol aromatics and lack of tree-fruit. I guessed Chenin Blanc (Vouvray) from France, which I like to think wasn't a terrible guess.
Regardless, I got two out of three! Woo hoo!
