Warped synthetic corks in Yellow Tail red?

First off, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I can't find any information online. Please let me know if I should put this somewhere else.

I know I shouldn't be expecting much from Yellow Tail, but I had a really weird experience tonight after buying a few bottles from CVS. I got a Pinot Noir and Merlot, and after opening the Pinot Noir, it smelled like old, vinegary wine even though it was brand new. Super weird, tasted gross. I opened the Merlot just to compare and found that though the corks were both synthetic, they looked totally different. The Pinot Noir's cork was a little warped, kind of fat at the ends, with weird lines going through it. The Merlot (which tasted fine) was more your standard synthetic cheap cork. What's going on? Could the Pinot have been subjected to high heat or something that messed up the taste and the cork? Are there fake Yellow Tail wines out there (if that's even a thing)?
