First of all, hi,
I'm quite new to this subreddit and not a wine expert at all. But as I was buying a little more "expensive" sort of wine I needed a little consultancy on what to buy and, hell, even how which wine tasted. As I knew the parents of my girlfriend like drier white wine the guy at the store recommended me some 13€-ish wine. As I'm a student this is already a lot to me but planned to spend around 20€. Therefor asking if he got some even more expensive.
He then told me white wine isn't normally as expensive as for example red wines. The people buying will spend hardly more then 20€ on a bottle of white wine while red wine can go up to 80€. He said he actually doesn't know why this is the case as the production process is normally (or always?) the same.
And here comes my question: Why is this case? Why do people pay way more red then for white wine?
TL;DR: Wanted a 20€-ish bottle of white wine. Got the most expensive they had for 13€ while red wine could have gone up to 60€+ easily.
Please don't hate on my little to not existent knowledge about wine, its taste and its production as well as my lacking english language knowledge.
