I want to buy a french wine but I am very worried, even after extensive study.

I have done a lot to study French wine considering I've never drunk it. What I've gathered is that these days it is very easy to spend upwards of $30 on a pretty lousy bottle of wine. The key is to have experience on the better winemakers and vineyards.

I really want to try some classic French reds. But I am very intimated at the prospect of paying more than $30 and not getting an enjoyable bottle. I want a bottle that is representative of Old World wine styles and French wine styles. I want to expand my understanding of French wine. Any advice that can be given on specific wineries or regions that tend to put out better stuff for the price would be appreciated, also any insight on what to keep in mind while looking for a French bottle is appreciated.
