A few weeks ago, my mom pulled a random wine off the shelf of our local wine store. Unfortunately I don't recall what the wine was, but it was a ~$15 red Bordeaux (I think Medoc).
Anyway, when we popped it open that night, we all found it to be undrinkable. It tasted overwhelmingly like an ash tray.
I suggested that this probably wasn't a "wine fault," but just a particular style--an earthiness/tobacco flavor that is characteristic of red Bordeaux wines. However, I was definitely speaking out of my ass when I said that (I only know so much about wine).
So I wanted to ask you all why the wine might have tasted this way. Would have decanting it revealed more fruity flavors (we didn't decant or leave it open)? Was it just a poor quality wine (i.e., it's hard to get good quality Bordeaux at low prices)? A wine fault? Or is this a style that people actually like?
Thanks for your help!
