I see a lot of tasting notes but no "these are my favorite wines of X varietal at about Y price." From the stuff I tasted I enjoy Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet.
I drank a 2012 Marques de Casa Cabernet and the tannins were far more prominant than a 2012 Franciscan Estate Cabernet which was much smoother, fruity and which I enjoyed more. Not sure if the former one is meant for the cellar. I got the former for 19 bucks and the later for 17 bucks at Costco. Estancia also has a pretty good Cab for around 10 dollars that I use for cooking which has moderate tannins and fruit.
My favorite Merlot that I tasted so far was a vintners reserve 2006 Kendal Jackson. Its been a while but it was incredibly smooth, had some structure and a lot of cherry. Yet a lot of Merlot I've tried below the 20 dollar price point doesn't seem worth it to me since they had little body.
La Crema Sonoma Coast Chardonnay was smooth, nice acidity and buttery to me while their Pinot Noir was meh to me.
Are there any varietals I should try? I was thinking about trying some Italian wines around the 20 and 30 dollar price range, if I can get a nice one for lower than that range that's great too.
