Splurge Meal Wine Choices - 2012 L’Atelier du Sud Grenache Blend or 2011 Chateau Gloria

I am on day 21 of my 21 Day Challenge. I have lost 12 lbs since we begun, which was a great benefit. I am still a long way away from where I want my weight to be, but I am feeling great. We have a splurge meal scheduled for tomorrow, as we are more likely succeed if you build treats to the plan.

Tomorrow I really want to do a meat and cheese board, with fresh crusty bread. But also the concept of a steak dinner, with a baked potato, and asparagus is really appealing too.

All in all, we have a lot of great wine on hand... since we are only having 1 bottle in a 3 week period I want to try something new. I have been looking at 2012 L’Atelier du Sud Grenache Blend, really hard.

However, the 2011 Chateau Gloria is going to be a really safe bet.

I am not sure.

Should I go for the poetry of the description of L'Atelier du Sud or go for the critical acclaim feed back Chateau Gloria.

I am thinking to hard about this too hard.

Any time you age a wine for over a year (this one was aged for 16 months), and especially in oak barrels, it adds a big jump up on the wine’s price tag. The extra time in cellar, coupled with the fact that the wine was hand harvested and sorted makes L’Atelier a real treat at an incredible value.

Crafted by a family run estate of multi-generational winemakers, this classic blend of Grenache and Syrah is the epitome of the full-bodied reds that have made the tiny village of Saint Saturnin a go-to stop for Southern France’s best table wines. Its time spent in Barrique barrels (which are smaller than normal) allows the wine to develop a wonderful palate that is soft and integrated - along with imparting some lovely aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon and tobacco. Jammy blackberry fruit with hints of dried cherries, earth and dried herbs make for a flavorful bottle that is perfect for a special date night.

Wine Spectator - "Mouthfilling, offering a fleshy, briary feel to the plum sauce, steeped currant and blackberry notes, with extra anise, tar and fruitcake details pumping through the finish. Lacks a little refinement in terms of structure, but this offers solid range and depth. Best from 2016 through 2024. Tasted twice, with consistent notes"

Wine Enthusiast - "This is an open, juicy wine with attractive fruit framed by firm but tamed tannins. The wine has a feeling of lightness, with black currant flavors that are lifted and fresh. This is a wine for medium-term aging. Drink from 2015. "
