TL;DR Are there any red wines from 2012 that would be good for drinking now, but would be excellent in 10 or 20 years?
My best friend in the world is graduating from college this spring. Our relationship is of the epic bromance variety (think JD and Turk or Shawn and Gus) He is really important to me, and I've been racking my brain trying to think of something to get him for his graduation. I've been having trouble finding something that shows how proud I am.
When doing my undergrad, I took a wine tasting course. One of my assignments was to taste 5 wines and record tasting notes and what not. This friend of mine and I went to Trader Joe's and bought 5 bottles of cheap wine. We got back to my place, whipped out the flavor wheel, and had our first wine tasting together. Another time, we watched Somm together and each brought a few bottles of wine to share.
Neither of us are big wine drinkers, but I've had some great times with this friend and wine. So my idea for a graduation present is to buy two bottles of the same wine. I'd like to drink one now (actually in May when he graduates) and then drink the other in like 10 or 20 years. That way we'll have an excuse to get together even if we end up growing apart. Ideally it would be from 2012, which is the year we met. So my question is, are there any wines from 2012 that would be excellent for drinking now, but age really well?
