Building a functional dilettante's cellar

The level of discussion in this subtext is appropriately set at a higher level than this question, but I wonder if the oenophiles of reddit wouldn't be the best possible people to ask it of.

I'm a casual wine drinker just knowledgeable enough to know what a Sancerre is (and that I enjoy those grassy Loire whites better than many a tart acidic white wine). But I'm really limited in the broader and deeper appreciation that would make building a functional drinking cellar easy. So my question is:

What ten relatively common and easily replaceable bottlings would you advise someone like me to keep on hand?

I know there's no right answer, but I'd love to hear what better informed wine drinkers would consider a proper basic cellar.
