Are certain wine styles better buys at a low budget?

Hey guys, my dad recently really got into wine, and my family does about one or two wine tasting trips every year since I turned 21, and I'd love to get to know wine a little better.

As a whiskey drinker, I've generally found that I can get really good bourbons at <$30, but pretty mediocre scotch at that price point.

I wanted to know if there was something similar in the wine world. Also, to piggyback - what are some of the better styles suited to just drinking alone? I usually drink 1 beer over the course of my studying, but my study sessions are pretty long and beer gets warm.
