So I have been lurking recently with the intent of getting into wine, coming from a craft beer and bourbon background. I had only ever really had a sip of red wine, but I had just opened a good beer when offered, and I accepted as to not be rude. It wasn't bad by any means, however, I did not know what I was tasting, and more importantly/selfishly, I was more focused on getting to that beer (3 Floyds - Gumballhead for any beer drinkers curious).
After curiosity took hold, and realizing there was a whole new world out there for me to explore, I started lurking and searching this subreddit. Going with suggestions from my 'craft beer' searches on this subreddit, reading the suggestions given to other craft beer drinkers making the leap, I bought a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Imgur
I must say I was very surprised at the suggestion. For lack of better expression, I enjoyed the shit out of it. It had a nice tartness to it, not too overwhelming. The only flavor I could really pick out of it tonight was grapefruit, which may be power of suggestion, as grapefruit notes were a reason I chose the style.
My friend who enjoys wine invited me along to a tasting this weekend which I have accepted. I feel my next few personal bottles will be New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, that way I can compare the wines side by side and learn to pick up on the subtle differences.
With that said, any feedback on my choice, or suggestions in general are more than welcome. Whether it be styles to try next, same style different region/country. I'm all ears (eyes/nose/mouth?). For my first tasting I did use a 12 oz, snifter glass that I use for my good beers, so if I should be using different glassware let me know.
I am also not one to shy away from drinks that assault the palate with a barrage of flavors. My favorite beers were pale ales/IPAs, goses/sour beers, imperial ipas/imperial and their barrel aged counter parts, and Scotch ales.
Thanks for reading and thanks to those here at /r/wine for having a very informative subreddit. I feel as if I'm standing on the edge of a cliff and I can't see the bottom, but now I at least have an umbrella.
